Katie Clancy, the self proclaimed happiest person in real estate, shares how you can turn your biggest failures into a success.
Katie Clancy is on a mission to make real estate the “happiest industry in the world.” She says her past mistakes include sending a text that was meant for her husband to her client instead, arriving at a showing at 10:00 instead of 1:00, and sending a text about another agent to a thread with her on it. We’ve all been there in some form or another, right?
Can you take your failures and turn them into success?
Clancy suggests after every failure, you begin by assessing from the victim’s perspective. Who have you wronged? And how can you fix it?
Naturally, a lot of us are what Clancy calls, “allergic to conflict.” However, in a situation such as this, it is important to confront it head on. After sending a nasty text about another co-worker to the co-worker herself, Clancy states, “I wanted to blow up my phone and run away and never talk to or see her again, but I couldn’t. I took a deep breath and I picked up the phone and I called her. I told her I just made a really bad move, you caught me on a really bad day, my guard was down and I snapped and made a bad choice. Then I reached out to my management and I owned it.” It is also important to recognize that when mistakes are made in your business, regardless of who was at fault, take ownership. It is your company and at the end of the day, what happens in it is your responsibility.
Besides a few crazy mistakes, Clancy also talks about some of the personal difficulties she has faced, including how she was diagnosed with AFO (ankle foot orthosis) while pregnant. She decided to have the recommended surgery, and unfortunately she still didn’t get the results she wanted. After being told that she would suffer a lifetime of consequences, she took matters into her own hands. Today, Clancy is doing better than any doctors suspected she would due to her mental strength and refusing to settle.
Clancy began her real estate career in 2006, 18 months later, the economy was crashing and Clancy had only sold one home. During the recession, Clancy almost lost her house (twice), had 2 accidental pregnancies, one that ended in a miscarriage, and her marriage was on the brink of divorce. She refused to settle for the kind of life that was full of these disappointments and persevered.
After nearly giving up, Clancy decided to change her mentality and do what she could to be a blessing to those around her, beginning with her husband. Because of her shift in attitude, her marriage is better than ever and her real estate business eventually started to boom and grew into what it is today. Her motto in life is to “leave people better than you find them.”
Clancy is a classic example of overcoming adversity and turning challenges into triumphs.
